Nemipterus japonicus, commonly known as The Japanese threadfin bream, is a marine fish native to the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In Malayalam it is called Navara/Kilimeen, In Tamil, it is known as Sennagarai and Mudumagalu in Kannada. It is very abundant in coastal waters, mainly found on mud or sand bottoms, usually in schools (in group). They feed on small fishes, crustaceans, mollusc’s (mainly cephalopods), etc. Marketed mainly fresh, but also frozen, steamed, dried-salted, dry-smoked, fermented or made into fish balls and fish meal.
HEALTH BENEFITSThe fish is high in protein, calcium and phosphorus. The calcium and phosphorus helps to strengthen the bone and teeth. Also the unsaturated fatty acids in the fish help to control the cholesterol level in blood.
